چکیده

We discuss a number of techniques for determining the Minkowski dimension of bounded subsets of some Euclidean space of any dimension, including: the box-counting dimension and equivalent definitions based on various box-counting functions; the similarity dimension via the Moran equation (at least in the case of self-similar sets); the order of the (box-)counting function; the classic result on compact subsets of the real line due to Besicovitch and Taylor, as adapted to the theory of fractal strings; and the abscissae of convergence of new classes of zeta functions. Specifically, we define box-counting zeta functions of infinite bounded subsets of Euclidean space and discuss results from [17] pertaining to distance and tube zeta functions. Appealing to an analysis of these zeta functions allows for the development of theories of complex dimensions for bounded sets in Euclidean space, extending techniques and results regarding (ordinary) fractal strings obtained by the first author and van Frankenhuijsen.

Box-Counting Dimension of Fractal Urban Form: Stability Issues and Measurement Design

The difficulty to obtain a stable estimate of fractal dimension for stochastic fractal (e.g., urban form) is an unsolved issue in fractal analysis. The widely used box-counting method has three main issues: 1) ambiguities in setting up a proper box cover of the object of interest; 2) problems of limited data points for box sizes; 3) difficulty in determining the scaling range. These issues lead...

Fractal Structure of 4D Euclidean Simplicial Manifold

The fractal properties of four-dimensional Euclidean simplicial manifold generated by the dynamical triangulation are analyzed on the geodesic distance D between two vertices instead of the usual scale between two simplices. In order to make more unambiguous measurement of the fractal dimension, we employ a different approach from usual, by measuring the box-counting dimension which is computed...

Closed Fractal Interpolation Surfaces

Based on the construction of bivariate fractal interpolation surfaces, we introduce closed spherical fractal interpolation surfaces. The interpolation takes place in spherical coordinates and with the transformation to Cartesian coordinates a closed surface arises. We give conditions for this construction to be valid and state some useful relations about the Hausdorff and the Box counting dimen...

Fractality and Lapidus zeta functions at infinity

We study fractality of unbounded sets of finite Lebesgue measure at infinity by introducing the notions of Minkowski dimension and content at infinity. We also introduce the Lapidus zeta function at infinity, study its properties and demonstrate its use in analysis of fractal properties of unbounded sets at infinity. Arbitrarily Accurate Approximate Inertial Manifolds of Fixed Dimension

By employing an embedding result due to Mañé, and its recent strengthening due to Foias & Olson it is shown that a global attractor with finite fractal (box counting) dimension d lies within an arbitrarily small neighbourhood of a smooth graph over the space spanned by the first [[2d+1]] Fourier-Galerkin modes. The proof is, however, non-constructive.
